Hurtling across the undulating plains that host Africa's greatest wildlife retreat, the sight below is breathtaking. Dotting the vast plains are exposed hills scantly vegetated unveiling the crimson earth. In a flash, a sizable flock of Zebras emerge and from my window seat I count perhaps 100s of them grazing gracefully under the morning sun.
This was an edifying 45 minute flight from Nairobi, I ponder silently as we are ushered into a four wheel land rover to drive us to Cottars camp. Located in exquisite hills on a game concession adjoining the Serengeti as well as the Masai Mara, the vicinity around the camp guarantees seclusion and ample wildlife giving the feel of a special game reserve.

After lunch we set out in 2 autos seeking for the big five and before long we come across a pride of lions wallowing beneath thickets of shrubs away from the scorching mid morning sunshine. After a temporary stop to photograph the family, we continue in the unmarked road towards the river sneaking through overgrown thickets. Finally we come to the banks of the river and pure to the Masai Mara safari expedition; there before our sight is a flock of Elephant bulls, watering. On the other side of the river we locate a large flock of Buffalo's with young ones grazing openly beneath the wooded acacia plants. Amidst them are numerous gazelles and two giraffes. Our cameras pop endlessly as we soak in the events.
Time goes by swiftly and in a while we turn back to take a return voyage to our aboard having had a blistering first adventure. Our guide elevates our expectations when he outlines that after dinner later that evening, our odyssey continues with a night game drive. A night game drive by all means is much more fantastic because that is when you get to discover the predators attentive and in a hunting mode whilst a number of the nocturnal animals like the hippo appear to graze notwithstanding the dangers of this African jungle.
