When you buy beads online, you run the risk of not getting just what you thought . Not to say that an organization is trying to scan you, but they are going to present to you the best version of that item they have, and what you get might fall short of that.
This isn't a new concept. We're used to it in other areas of ads. That burger on the billboard looks way better than the one they hand me in the drive thru. But I never think anything off that. Somehow, when I started ordering my jewelry items this was a surprise to me.
Lighting. There's more concerned in photographing something that a camera with a flash. Especially when shooting something so little. The lighting for this tiny object has to be perfect, permitting you to see amazing colors & shine, while not making a lot of dark shadows. The thing is, once in your possession, and without all that lighting, things can look quite different. That deep garnet red now appears black, and the silver flecks in that navy piece can't even be seen in standard light. I tell you this just to make you conscious of some of the differences when you buy beads online.
Size. Most beads are measured in millimeters. In and of themselves those are very tiny. But when you think that the average finger is 13 millimeters wide, than a 6 mm stone might be very big. Get a sense of what those sizes mean in real life. The ad you're looking at likely has the image blown up, and nothing else there for a frame of reference as to size. You may even take a ruler with you to a shop that sells beads, just to get a familiarity with the topic.
Patterns. You might be looking at a lovely tiger eye bead. And you wish a whole strand of them. Well, not every bead on the strand will look exactly like the picture. Patterns & pigment might change from bead to bead. Now in my view, that is what you want. That is what makes a piece unique and so valuable. But the first time you buy beads online, this might come as a shock.
